Patient Advocacy Group Funding

Amgen partners with patient advocacy groups for the benefit of patients and in a way that is true to the Industry Codes of Practice and Amgen's policy. Amgen is committed to making public the scope of its partnerships in the UK & Ireland in order to increase transparency. This includes stating the amount of funding that Amgen provides each year.

For the purposes of transparency and clarity, the following declarations include donations and sponsorships provided by Amgen Limited (UK), Amgen Ireland Limited, and also donations and sponsorships made by Amgen GmbH (Europe) and Amgen Inc. (USA) to patient advocacy organisations based in the UK and Ireland.

Basil Skyers Myeloma Foundation

The Basil Skyers Myeloma Foundation provides services and practical support for patients with multiple myeloma, their families and carers. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a donation of £8,500 to support the charity to further develop its research programme, and a programme of partnership engagement to raise the profile of myeloma, plus an additional £750 granted as honoraria to attend an advisory board meeting.

Bowel Cancer UK

Bowel Cancer UK is the UK's leading bowel cancer research charity. It is determined to save lives and improve the quality of life for all those affected by bowel cancer. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided sponsorship of £7,000 for two nurse study days.

Breast Cancer Now

Breast Cancer Now is the UK’s largest breast cancer research charity – and it is dedicated to funding research into this devastating disease. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided £1,200 in corporate sponsorship of the UK Breast Cancer Research Symposium.

British Kidney Patients Association

BKPA is the UK’s leading kidney patient support charity, providing practical, financial and emotional support for kidney patients and their families and campaigning to improve care services across the UK. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided £228.04 in travel support to attend a meeting as a speaker.

Cancer Campaigning Group

The Cancer Campaigning Group (CCG) is a coalition of national cancer-related charities representing service providers, research, advocacy and campaigning groups for cancer patients and their families. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided sponsorship of £8,500 for corporate membership.

Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research. Its vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. In 2016, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided £1,666 in congress sponsorship.

Cancer52

Cancer52 represents 90 predominantly small cancer charities united by their vision of seeing a better future for everyone affected by the rare and less common cancers, which account for more than half of all cancer deaths in the UK. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided sponsorship of £10,875 to support the publication of a Clinical Nurse Specialist Report.

Diabetes UK

Diabetes UK is the leading charity that cares for, connects with and campaigns on behalf of every person affected by, or at risk of, diabetes. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided £13,760 in sponsorship for exhibition space at the Diabetes UK Professional Conference.

HEART UK

HEART UK’s aim is to prevent premature deaths caused by high cholesterol. HEART UK is committed to raising awareness about the risks of high cholesterol, lobbying for better detection of those at risk and supporting health professional training. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a donation of £10,000 to help fund its Cholesterol Helpline. Amgen Ltd (UK) also provided £53,000 to continue its membership of HEART UK’s Campaigning Committee and Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Action Group which are major elements of the charity’s campaigning activities – to support its ambition of preventing premature deaths caused by high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, plus £10,000 for exhibition space and £303.33 for delegate attendance at the HEART UK Annual Conference.  Additionally, £2,400 was provided to support attendance at an advisory board meeting plus travel support of £485.60.

Independent Cancer Patients Voices

Independent Cancer Patients' Voice (ICPV) is a patient advocate group independent of established UK cancer charities. Its aim is to improve existing treatments for every cancer patient and develop new treatments by bringing the patients’ voice into clinical research. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a £1,500 donation for an Advocates’ course with the aim of providing an introduction to basic cancer biology.

ITP Support Association

The ITP Support Association is a UK registered charity which aims to promote and improve the general welfare of patients, and the families of patients with immune (idiopathic) thrombocytopenic purpura. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a donation of £5,000 to support the ITP Support Association in its education and awareness raising activities.

Kidney Research UK

Kidney Research UK is the leading charity committed to developing treatments, patient information and raising vital public awareness around kidney disease to help save lives. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided £5,200 in sponsorship to support a patient experience survey.

Leukaemia CARE 

Leukaemia CARE exists to provide vital care and support to all those whose lives have been affected by blood or lymphatic cancer. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided £10,000 to provide patient support including a national patient and carer conference focusing on all aspects of blood cancer, plus £787.90 granted as honoraria and travel expenses to attend an advisory board meeting.  In addition, Amgen provided sponsorship of £750 for an Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia Nurse Study Day.

Melanoma Focus

Melanoma Focus commissions and funds innovative melanoma research, while providing support and information for patients, carers and healthcare professionals. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided sponsorship of £2,000 to support a regional meeting.

Melanoma UK

Melanoma UK aims to support patients and their families during difficult times faced upon diagnosis, with access to the best care available to support them throughout the journey. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a donation of £5,000 to contribute to the charity’s core costs.

Myeloma UK

Myeloma UK is the only organisation in the UK providing patient support focused on myeloma. It aims to help myeloma patients live longer and with a better quality of life. The charity focuses on accelerating the discovery and development and access to new treatments, while helping patients and their families cope with everything a diagnosis of myeloma brings. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) supported Myeloma UK with a grant of £37,500 to provide a range of services to patients and their families. In addition, £10,000 was provided in sponsorship to enter an Amgen team to the Myeloma UK London-Paris bike ride in 2016, plus £10,000 to enter a team into the 2017 ride.  Travel support of £284.24 was also provided to attend an advisory board meeting.

National Kidney Federation

The National Kidney Federation is the largest kidney patient charity in the UK. It is run by kidney patients, for kidney patients. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) granted a donation of £7,500 to support the charity.

National Osteoporosis Society

The National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) is the only UK wide charity dedicated to improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and fragility fractures. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided £29,950 in relation to sponsorship activities for the NOS Annual Conference. In addition, Amgen provided £804.17 in sponsorship to support local meetings.

Roy Castle Lung Foundation

The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation’s mission is “to defeat lung cancer”. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided an honoraria and travel support of £411.60 to attend a meeting.

Tenovus Cancer Care

Tenovus Cancer Care aims are simple. It wants to help prevent, treat and find a cure for cancer. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) granted a donation of £1,000 to support the charity.

The Patients Association

The Patients Association uses knowledge it gains from the thousands of accounts it receives each year from patients, carers, family members and friends about people’s experiences to campaign for improvements in health and social care service. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a donation of £1,000 to support the operation of the Patients Association patient/care helpline.

The Stroke Association

The Stroke Association is the UK's leading stroke charity changing the world for people affected by stroke. More people than ever are benefitting from cutting-edge treatments and making full recoveries. More people now understand the need to seek emergency treatment for stroke. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided sponsorship of £2,542 to exhibit at the UK Stroke Forum.

UK Myeloma Forum

UK Myeloma Forum aims to improve the care of patients with myeloma through the development and promotion of trials. The forum also provides education about myeloma to healthcare professionals and patients. As myeloma is often diagnosed late, raising awareness is important in aiding early diagnosis. In 2016, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided sponsorship of £6,000 for corporate membership.

 In 2016, Amgen Ireland Ltd made the following donation and sponsorship payments:

CROI (West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation) Heart and Stroke Centre

Croí is a not-for-profit foundation established in 1985 dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke in the region.  It is an independent organisation, totally funded through its own fundraising activities, voluntary contributions and philanthropic support.  In 2016, Amgen Ireland Ltd provided a grant of €3,500 to support the development of a Familial Hypercholesterolaemia booklet.

Irish Osteoporosis Society

The Irish Osteoporosis Society (IOS) has been dedicated to reducing the incidence of osteoporosis, a preventable bone disease in most cases, and promoting bone health. The IOS provides information to the public and health professionals on all aspects of the disease and offers support to people with osteoporosis and everyone at risk from the disease. In 2016, Amgen Ireland Ltd sponsored €2,250 in registration fees for healthcare professionals to attend its annual congress.

In 2016, Amgen GmbH (Europe) and Amgen Inc. (USA) also supported a number of international patient advocacy activities based in the UK. These are:

Bowel Cancer UK

Bowel Cancer UK is the UK's leading bowel cancer research charity. It is determined to save lives and improve the quality of life for all those affected by bowel cancer. In 2016, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided sponsorship of $75,000 to support the Get Tested campaign.

Europacolon

EuropaColon aims to unite patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, politicians, the media and the public in the fight against digestive cancers. The organisation works with 43 groups in 32 European countries and has been recognised as the voice of colorectal cancer patients in Europe. In 2016, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided €20,000 in sponsorship for various initiatives.

European FH Network

HEART UK is the secretariat for the FH Network. In Europe, it is predicted that between 1.8 and 4.5 million people have FH, but fewer than 15% of these cases are diagnosed. This means millions of people throughout Europe remain undiagnosed and at risk of developing early cardiovascular disease. The aims of the network are to identify those who may be at risk. In 2016, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided funding of £88,000 to support the network.

Genetic Alliance

Genetic Alliance UK is the national charity working to improve the lives of patients and families affected by all types of genetic conditions. It is an alliance of over 180 patient organisations. Its aim is to ensure that high quality services, information and support are provided to all. In 2016, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided sponsorship of £10,000 to become a corporate member of Rare Disease UK (a Genetic Alliance initiative), plus £2,000 to support its Annual Conference.

International Alliance of Patient Organizations (IAPO)

IAPO is a unique global alliance representing patients of all nations across all disease areas and promoting patient-centred healthcare across the world. In 2016, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided £40,000 in sponsorship to support IAPO to update its biosimilars toolkit. In addition, Amgen Inc. (USA) provided sponsorship of $50,000 for a health industry partnership.

Melanoma Focus

Melanoma Focus commissions and funds innovative melanoma research, while providing support and information for patients, carers and healthcare professionals. In 2016, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided sponsorship of £2,000 to support a regional meeting.

Melanoma Patient Conference CIC

Melanoma Patient Conference CIC has worked with patients and the medical profession to create a programme for an annual national event to provide information for patients on the current systems of care, treatment access and support for melanoma. In 2016, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided £20,000 in sponsorship to support the conference.

Myeloma UK

Myeloma UK is the only organisation in the UK providing patient support focused on myeloma. It aims to help myeloma patients live longer and with a better quality of life. The charity focuses on accelerating the discovery and development and access to new treatments, while helping patients and their families cope with everything a diagnosis of myeloma brings. In 2016 Amgen GmbH (Europe) supported Myeloma UK with sponsorship of £35,000 to provide a range of services to patients and their families.

The Paget’s Association

The Paget’s Association, also known as the National Association for the Relief of Paget’s Disease, is the only UK charity to focus solely on Paget’s Disease of Bone. The Association acts as a resource for patients, carers and health professionals, offering high quality information and support services. In 2016 Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided £30,000 for a workshop.

In addition to the above Amgen Ltd (UK) also donated £9,907 direct to charities in support of staff volunteering events and fundraising and Amgen Ireland Ltd donated €280.
