Patient Advocacy Group Funding

2020 | 2019 | 2018

Amgen partners with patient advocacy groups for the benefit of patients and in a way that is true to the Industry Codes of Practice and Amgen's policy. Amgen is committed to making public the scope of its partnerships in the UK & Ireland in order to increase transparency. This includes stating the amount of funding that Amgen provides each year.

For the purposes of transparency and clarity, the following declarations include donations and sponsorships provided by Amgen Limited (UK), Amgen Ireland Limited, and also donations and sponsorships made by Amgen GmbH (Europe) and Amgen Inc. (USA) to patient advocacy organisations based in the UK and Ireland.

 

Bowel Cancer UK

Bowel Cancer UK is the UK’s leading bowel cancer charity. It is determined to save lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer. Its vision is a future where nobody dies of the disease. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided sponsorship of £7,000 to sponsor two nurse study days and £2,000 to sponsor a patient day.

Breast Cancer Care

Breast Cancer Care is the only specialist UK wide charity providing support for women, men, family and friends affected by breast cancer. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) supported Breast Cancer Care with £5,401.85 to attend an advisory board meeting and to provide medical education sessions for helpline nurses.

Breast Cancer Haven

Breast Cancer Haven offers vital one-to-one emotional, physical and practical support to anyone affected by breast cancer. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a donation of £3,000 towards the charity’s core funding.

Breast Cancer Now

Breast Cancer Now is the UK’s largest breast cancer research charity – and it’s dedicated to funding research into this devastating disease. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided sponsorship of £45,000 for the UK Interdisciplinary Breast Cancer Symposium for stand space and two symposia. Plus, travel and honorarium of £632.50 to attend an advisory board meeting.

Crohn’s & Colitis UK

Crohn’s & Colitis UK is the UK’s leading charity in the battle against Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Founded as a patients’ association in 1979, it now has 40,000 members across the UK. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a donation of £5,000 towards the charity’s core funding.

Crohn’s and Colitis in Childhood Research Association (CICRA)

CICRA’s mission is to lead research into better treatments, to support children and families with relevant information and advice, to work with health professionals to improve care, and to give children a voice to increase public understanding of Crohn's and colitis. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a donation of £5,000.

Diabetes UK

Diabetes UK is the leading UK charity for people affected by diabetes. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided sponsorship of £13,320 in sponsorship for exhibition space and exhibitor passes at the 2018 Diabetes UK Professional Conference, plus £1,250 in sponsorship for regional conferences.

Findacure

Findacure is a UK charity that builds the rare diseases community to drive research and develop treatments. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a donation of £3,000 to support its workshop programme.

HEART UK

HEART UK’s aim is to prevent premature deaths caused by high cholesterol. HEART UK is committed to raising awareness about the risks of high cholesterol, lobbying for better detection of those at risk and supporting health professional training. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided £48,000 for membership to HEART UK’s Campaigning Committee and Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Action Group, plus a £6,000 additional sponsorship to the Campaigning Committee to align financial years. HEART UK also conducted cholesterol testing for staff and for this were provided £5010. HEART UK also received support of £640 towards a local patient support meeting.

Additionally, Amgen Ltd (UK) collaborated with HEART UK on a social media project to raise awareness of the dangers of unmanaged cholesterol. This support consisted of the provision of £1,017.04 paid directly to Facebook to facilitate the distribution of content, plus £6,490.00 provided to WE Worldwide (communications agency) to facilitate the set-up and ongoing analysis of the campaign’s performance and £9,576.25 to provide support to HEART UK to enable it to perform website updates as part of the campaign.

ITP Support Association

The ITP Support Association is a UK registered charity which aims to promote and improve the general welfare of patients, and the families of patients with immune (idiopathic) thrombocytopenic purpura. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a donation of £5,000 to support the ITP Support Association in its education and awareness raising.

Kidney Research UK

Kidney Research UK is the leading charity committed to developing treatments, patient information and raising vital public awareness to help save lives. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided £7,000 in sponsorship for the Kidney Research Fellows.

Leukaemia Care

Leukaemia Care exists to provide vital care and support to all those whose lives have been affected by blood or lymphatic cancer. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a grant of £10,000 to support new projects focusing on the education and training of haematology nurses. In addition, sponsorship of £750 was provided for a Diagnosis to Treatment Study Day.

Melanoma Focus

Melanoma Focus concentrate efforts in the fight against melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided sponsorship for its 2018 and 2019 Melanoma Focus Study Days and regional meetings of £14,000, plus an additional £170 for delegate attendance.

Melanoma Patient Conference CIC

Melanoma Patient Conference CIC has worked with patients and the medical profession to create a programme for an annual national event to provide information for patients on the current systems of care, treatment access and support for melanoma. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided a sponsorship of £8,000 to support its annual conference.

Myeloma UK

Myeloma UK aims to help myeloma patients live longer and with a better quality of life. The charity focuses on accelerating the discovery and development and access to new treatments, while helping patients and their families cope with everything a diagnosis of myeloma brings. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) supported Myeloma UK with a grant of £80,000 to provide a range of services to patients and their families, plus a sponsorship of £14,935 for an Amgen Team to participate in the Myeloma UK London-Paris Bike Ride.

National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS)

The National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society is ‘the voice’ of people affected by Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) across the whole of the UK and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided NRAS £1437.50 to participate in an advisory board and £614 to speak at an internal meeting.

Roy Castle Lung Foundation

Roy Castle Lung Foundation is the only UK charity wholly dedicated to beating lung cancer. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) supported Roy Castle Lung Foundation with sponsorship of £10,000 to produce patient and carer information materials.

National Osteoporosis Society

The National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) is the only UK wide charity dedicated to improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and fragility fractures. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided £39,500 in sponsorship to support local meetings, plus £5,360 for conference sponsorship and delegate passes.

The Patients Association

The Patients Association is an independent patient charity campaigning for improvements in health and social care for patients. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided the charity with a grant of £5,000 to support the core operating costs of the Patients Association’s Helpline.

The Stroke Association

The Stroke Association is the UK's leading stroke charity changing the world for people affected by stroke. More people than ever are benefitting from cutting-edge treatments and making full recoveries. More people now understand the need to seek emergency treatment for stroke. In 2018, Amgen Ltd (UK) provided sponsorship of £17,460 to exhibit and for delegate attendance at the UK Stroke Forum and for meeting attendance and stand space.

In 2018, Amgen Ireland Ltd made the following donation and sponsorship payments:

Croí

Croí is a registered charity and its goal is to lead the fight against heart disease and stroke, with a special focus on the West of Ireland. Its aim is to ‘prevent disease, save lives, promote recovery and wellbeing’. In 2018, Amgen Ireland Ltd provided €14,000 for two ‘Masterclass’ meetings and sponsorship of a national prevention meeting.

Irish Osteoporosis Society

The Irish Osteoporosis Society is the Irish National Expert regarding bone health. The Charity is dedicated to reducing the incidence of osteoporosis and promoting good bone health. In 2018, Amgen Ireland Ltd provided €31,000 for the sponsorship of a social media disease awareness campaign and to support content development for its website. In addition, €15,000 was provided in sponsorship to exhibit and attend the national medical conference.

National Osteoporosis Society

The National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) is the only UK wide charity dedicated to improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and fragility fractures. In 2018, Amgen Ireland Ltd provided £4,415.01 for speaker fees for Fracture Liaison Service activities.

In 2018, Amgen GmbH (Europe) also supported a number of international patient advocacy activities based in the UK. These are:

Digestive Cancers Europe (DiCE) (formerly Europacolon)

DiCE gives a voice to people living with all types of digestive cancers (including colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, oesophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer and rare gastrointestinal cancers). In 2018, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided €50,000 to support a number of biosimilar related activities.

HEART UK

In 2018, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided a grant of £25,000 to support HEART UK’s patient ambassador programme.

Kidney Research UK

In 2018, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided grants of £5,500 to support the 2017 and 2018 World Kidney Days.

International Alliance of Patient Organizations (IAPO)

IAPO is a unique global alliance representing patients of all nations across all disease areas and promoting patient-centred healthcare across the world. In 2018, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided sponsorship of $50,000 for a health industry partnership.

Melanoma UK

Melanoma UK’s challenge and desire is to give patients and their families much needed support during the very difficult times faced upon diagnosis. In 2018, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided €3890.49 to support advisory board attendance.

Myeloma UK

Myeloma UK aims to help myeloma patients live longer and with a better quality of life. The charity focuses on accelerating the discovery and development and access to new treatments, while helping patients and their families cope with everything a diagnosis of myeloma brings. In 2018, Amgen GmbH (Europe) supported Myeloma UK with sponsorship of £14,935 to enter a European team to the Myeloma UK London-Paris Bike Ride. Staff also donated their unused luncheon vouchers amounting to £1232.98.

In addition, Amgen Inc. (USA) provided €242.73 in speaker fees.

Stroke Alliance for Europe (SAFE)

SAFE’s mutual goal is to drive stroke prevention up the European political agenda and prevent the incidence of stroke through education. In 2018, Amgen GmbH (Europe) provided €20,000 in a grant to support the organisation and €30,000 to support the publication of The Economic Impact of Stroke in Europe Report 2018 – 2019.

In addition to the above Amgen Ltd (UK) and Amgen Ireland Ltd also donated £3,250.00 direct to charities in support of staff volunteering events and fundraising.
